Poor management 'causes almost half of resignations'

Date Posted: 10/08/2010

It is often said that workers don't leave organisations, they leave Managers. Management failures are the main factor behind more than two-fifths of staff resignations, new research has found.

Outdated management styles are the cause of 42 per cent of resignations, according to a new study.

The research, conducted by BT Business, found that workers are more than willing to move to a new job elsewhere if they disagree with the way their current employer operates.

One of the least popular techniques was constantly monitoring what staff are doing, rather than just leaving them to get on with their jobs.

Robin Mackenzie, marketing director of BT Business, said: "Things have to become much more collaborative and trusting, and managers then have to trust their people to then deliver on the things that they're there to do."

Managers should also make sure they are embracing the latest technologies, as people now expect this at work, he stated.

Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, urged managers to communicate their firm's survival plan to their staff to ensure they remain motivated during the recession.

With companies still needing to take, and follow through on. tough decisions, the loyalty and commitment of staff is being severely tested.
