Saying thank you 'boosts employee engagement'

Praising staff can lead to a substantial boost in employee engagement, a new study has revealed.
Simply saying thank you can boost employee engagement levels by nearly a third, according to new research.
A study by HR consultancy firm Towers Perrin revealed that showing appreciation for workers' efforts can lead to a 20 to 30 per cent increase in engagement.
However, Adrian Gostick, who co-authored a book based on the survey, warned that managers need to take into account cultural differences when issuing thanks.
"While employees in China and Russia value team recognition more highly than individual acclaim, the more modest British prefer private recognition from their boss," he said.
Chester Elton, his partner on the project, added that the effect of praise "holds true on an international scale".
Despite this, senior managers still have some work to do on the matter.
The study also found that while 56 per cent of bosses stated they appreciate their employees, only 23 per cent of staff agreed.
Indeed, the situation could be even worse, with a separate study from Endaba finding that more than half of workers do not trust their managers.
