UK Workplaces 'face stress epidemic'

Workplaces in the UK are "facing a stress epidemic", according to new research.
A study conducted by Norwich Union Healthcare has revealed that the current economic climate is taking its toll on people, with around half admitting to being stressed and one in five suffering from depression.
Dr Douglas Wright, head of clinical governance at the company, called for more action to be taken to address the situation.
"This is an alarming diagnosis for the future economic health of the country's businesses and a very clear signal that employers and government must work together with the UK's workforce on occupational health," he said.
Dr Wright called on businesses to provide managers with the training they need to identify and help stressed out workers, as well as enabling them to advise on things such as debt.
Companies should also put wellbeing programmes in place and promote healthy eating and exercise if they have not already done so, he added.
Recently, a study by the Work Life Balance Centre and Coventry University found that four of the five health-related indicators it monitors have increased in the last year.
